Jesus, remember me ...

Jesus, remember me ...

“And he said to him, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.” Luke 23:43

In February 2014, my dad was suffering from some serious illnesses. While at the hospital I wanted to make sure that he trusted Jesus as his savior. “Dad, you believe Jesus is the only way to heaven, right”? “Yes, I do believe … but I feel bad that I don’t know many Bible verses,” he replied anxiously. Before I could say that remembering verses isn’t the most important thing, he said in a calm, confident tone – “wait, I do remember one about the thief on the cross and Jesus’ promise.”

He passionately whispered: “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom”.

Through tears I said: “dad, that is ALL you need to know.”

At Lent, many people give up things, (most items can be given up any time). And on Easter, pews are overflowing with those seeking to recommit attendance. Those things aren’t bad – but God doesn’t want religious activity based on human efforts. Our sacrifices don’t mean anything to Him (see Psalm 51:16-17). He wants relationships built on hearts that cry out to Him, admitting that we can’t earn anything.

I remember a speaker at a ministry event telling attendees in his intro – “you’re all thieves who will face a judge one day!” Wow, what a welcome. He then explained that ALL of us, including him, are thieves who steal from God (resources, relationships, time) and will have to decide our plea. We can continue in our selfish ways. Or simply cry out to The Savior “remember me…”

I pray you will turn your gaze toward Jesus today as we prepare to celebrate His resurrection. He will turn to you with the promise that “today” you are forgiven and granted access into eternity with Him.
