I still can hear my mom saying during my rebellious childhood, ok sometimes yelling, to me “do as I say!”. Ultimately, her directive created a better outcome than my selfish plan could.
A story of a mom taking charge is told in the Gospel of John. Guests were at a wedding laughing, dancing, and feasting. Then it happened. Jesus’ mother Mary learned the wine for guests ran out. She thought “surely my son will take care of it, He’s the Son of God”. Mary informed Him, and not wanting the bride’s parents to be embarrassed she took command. Maybe with the tone of a proud parent Mary instructed the waiters to basically “listen up, my son has the solution”. She probably smiled under the clasped hands to her face as she waited for Him to perform His first public miracle.
While it wasn’t the time to draw attention to Himself, Jesus had a heart to serve. I’m sure He wanted this God-ordained marriage between the bride and groom to be a celebration without troubles. The waiters filled the jars and must have wondered what is this guy thinking. Jesus didn’t say a long prayer, touch the fresh water with His finger, or even lay a hand on the clay jars. Jesus looked to heaven, gave a quiet thanks, and then created the extraordinary from the ordinary. “Now...” (v. 8) things were made right and the wedding feast could go on.
Mom’s voice of instruction ended on July 4, 2024 at 96 years old. She lived an extraordinary lifetime of experiences. She was married for 65 years to her middle-school homeroom boyfriend, raised five children, loved nine grandchildren and eight great-grand children. Most importantly she trusted Jesus as her Savior and has been invited to the most glorious wedding feast ever planned (Revelation 19:9).
I believe God wants to take each of our ordinary lives that often run dry, and transform them into a lifetime of extraordinary experiences that can bless others. All we have to do is follow Him.
