In the coming weeks I am publishing a devotion message based on sketches from the Gospel of John. The actions of two friends have encouraged me - one sent me a music list based on the Gospel of John, and one is reading a chapter a day. I hope you enjoy this series.
“I am a voice of one crying out in the wilderness…” John 1:23
Have you ever received news that you were eager to share but nobody was around? Maybe it was to announce a new job promotion, your marriage engagement, or birth of a child. I experienced the latter two. While frustrated, the joy didn’t subside – I still wanted to proclaim to family members and friends the emotions that my heart overflowed with.
When John the Baptist set-out to share his news, many were not present - mentally or spiritually. Who was this uneducated, unkept man with uncomfortable clothing to tell them what filled him with so much joy? Rumor had it he lived outdoors and survived by eating bugs!
John was the cousin of Jesus who had the privilege of living to proclaim with anyone he came in contact with that Jesus is the “Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world”. From the shepherds he met while catching his lunch in the field, to laborers, or the finely dressed leaders who turned-up their noses at him – for his simple faith more than his frayed appearance - John didn’t care who it was, he was driven to share the good news.
John didn’t waiver. When the first wave of doubters came (the priests and Levites, John 1:19), he wasn’t discouraged. Surely the top-brass leaders (the Pharisees, John 1:24) would straighten him out and silence this crazy competitor for the hearts of people. He didn’t flinch but kept faithful. While he lived-out a short earthly assignment, John pointed hundreds to prepare for the eternal promise soon appearing in Jesus – God’s Chosen One (John 1:34). They in effect encouraged countless others after encountering Jesus.
I believe that each of us who believes that Jesus is the Way is called to share the excitement of how we were given hope of forgiveness of sins and enternal life. It doesn’t have to be loud or dramtic and we don’t have act or dress a certain way. A whisper of your faith can become a bid for someone to believe. The reality is some won’t listen. But others will and God’s Chosen One will ultimately call out to say to them “come, follow Me...” (Mark 1:17)
